Humidification for Hospitals & Healthcare

Maintain a Healthy Indoor Environment with an Energy Efficient
Adiabatic Humidification System

While most people consider proper humidification a matter of comfort, it also plays a key factor in maintaining health. The human respiratory system requires and creates warm, saturated air in the lungs and airways. Low humidity environments put a strain on this system and inhibit proper lung function. Additionally, studies have shown that maintaining RH levels above 40% inhibit the spread and viability of airborne virus. Low RH levels can lead to slow recoveries and even hospital acquired infections.

Recently, ASHRAE Standard 170-2013 Addendum m approved the use of energy efficient high-pressure fogging systems for hospital humidification.

The fogging process is very simple and straightforward. First the water supply is rigorously purified and sterilized, then the water is pressurized to 1,000 psi via the MeeFog pump skid. The water is then fed to MeeFog nozzles, which inject pure water fog into the air stream. This allows for accurate control of humidity to a specified RH%.

Hospitals & Healthcare

MeeFog humidification includes the necessary reverse osmosis water treatment systems, and valves for recirculating water in the pressure lines back to a UV treated holding tank.

Reverse Osmosis Water Purification

Reverse Osmosis Water Purification

City water is treated using the Reverse Osmosis water treatment rack. This purifies the water, removing minerals, particulate, and microorganisms. Systems include automated membrane flushing, pre-treatment filtration, and UV Re-Circulation.

MeeFog Pump

MeeFog Pump

The high-pressure pump maintains 1000 psi water pressure in order to atomize the water into tiny droplets that can evaporate into the air stream. The pump rack has a VFD with panel-mounted controller that maintains pressure when staging valves open and close.

Staging Valves

Staging Valves

The valve panel allows precise control over how much humidification is injected into the air stream based on a signal from the BMS. It is possible to control the humidification level in the space to plus or minus 1% RH.

Nozzle Manifolds

Nozzle Manifolds

Fog nozzles are mounted on stainless steel tubing inside the air handler. These nozzles produce droplets in the 10-micron range. These precision nozzles are manufactured and tested in Mee Industries' own facility.

Mist Eliminator

Mist Eliminator

The mist eliminator removes water droplets larger than 5 microns. The filter pads can come off their stainless steel frames and can be washed or replaced easily.

Droplet Comparison Chart

Small droplets have a larger surface to volume ratio compared to larger droplets. This allows them to evaporate much more rapidly than larger droplets.

Hospital & Healthcare FAQ

Maintaining the right humidity is critical for infection control, patient recovery, and staff comfort. Low humidity dries out mucous membranes, making people more vulnerable to airborne illnesses. Research shows that maintaining 40–60% RH reduces the survival rate of airborne pathogens, creating a healthier environment for patients, visitors, and staff. Proper humidification is essential for infection control and patient recovery.

Unlike steam systems that add heat or compressed air systems that are energy-intensive, MeeFog uses high-pressure fogging to create ultra-fine droplets that evaporate instantly. This method provides precise humidity control while consuming a fraction of the energy. In healthcare environments, this translates to safer air quality, reduced pathogen spread, and lower operating costs.

The cancer center needed to stabilize humidity in its 14,000 sq. ft. vivarium running on 100% outside air. A MeeFog system with a variable-speed 3 hp pump and four levels of fogging maintained 30–60% RH and 72°F, even on the coldest winter days. Results included: $35,000 annual energy savings compared to compressed air humidification, More precise humidity control for sensitive research environments, Reduced maintenance and higher reliability, The success was so significant that the center is considering MeeFog as the new standard across its facilities.

MeeFog systems consume up to 90% less energy than steam humidifiers and dramatically outperform compressed air systems. In the NYC cancer center, the MeeFog system cost about $65,000 to install but delivered $35,000 in annual electricity savings, resulting in a payback period of less than 2 years.

Yes. MeeFog is ideal for vivariums, labs, surgical suites, and patient-care spaces that demand precise humidity control. With its scalable pump and nozzle arrays, MeeFog can handle large outside air volumes while maintaining tight humidity ranges required for both animal care and medical research.

Hospitals are under pressure to reduce energy costs while maintaining strict infection control. MeeFog provides sustainable humidification by using small high-pressure pumps instead of large boilers, cutting energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. By lowering operational costs and supporting patient wellness, MeeFog aligns with both financial and environmental healthcare priorities.
