Steam Condenser Pre-Cooling Systems
Upgrade Condensers on Steam Turbines and Improve Power Plant Reliability
MeeFog systems can be used to pre-cool ambient air for air cooled condensers. Pre-cooling can decrease back pressure on steam turbines improving power plant efficiency. MeeFog systems give maximum cooling without wasting water. Mee Industries would be pleased to provide a feasibility study and detailed proposal for your application. This can include all needed equipment, such as water treatment, storage tanks, controls integration, etc. Mee also provides full installation or supervision, commissioning and testing, operator training and after-sale service and support.
- Cools the inlet air of an ACC and reduces back pressure on the steam turbine.
- Increases heat rejection from existing units.
- Droplets are small enough to evaporate without excessive water fallout.
- The use of demineralized water avoids fouling of the fins and tubes.
We’ll gladly supply a detailed power recovery report for your existing gas turbines including:
- Installed system cost.
- Guaranteed power gain.
- Predicted MW-hr gain per year.
System Overview
Nozzle Comparison

At an operating pressure of 2000 psi, the resulting average droplet size is roughly one tenth the diameter of a single strand of human hair.
MeeFog System Benefits
- Increases heat rejection from existing units.
- Increases refrigeration capacity.
- Cools and conditions.
- Easy to service and maintain.
- Ultra-fine fog droplets.
- Stainless steel construction.
- Easy to retrofit.
Droplet Comparison

Small droplets have a larger surface to volume ratio compared to larger droplets. This allows them to evaporate much more rapidly than larger droplets.

Combined Cycle Power Plant Boosts Efficiency and Upholds Environmental Standards
A combined cycle power plant installed the MeeFog pre-cooling system above the ACC fans to reduce steam turbine backpressure by lowering condenser air temperature. The fog droplets evaporate fully, preventing water fallout and fouling, ensuring efficient cooling and increased power output.
System Design:
Nozzle count: ~26,000 nozzles in 6 independent stages
Cooling capacity: Up to 10ºF reduction in condenser inlet air temperature
Water flow rate: 777 GPM
Pumps: Six 50 hp high-pressure pump units, skid-mounted and independently operable
FAQs About Steam Condenser Pre-Cooling Systems
By lowering condenser inlet temperature, a MeeFog pre-cooling system can increase turbine output, improve heat rate, and reduce fuel consumption per MWh. Many plants see strong gains during hot and dry periods when condenser performance limits capacity. Actual results depend on your site conditions, existing condenser design, and control strategy.
Our system operates with very small droplet sizes and precise nozzle placement, so water fully evaporates before reaching sensitive equipment. This design protects turbine blades, condenser tubes, and cooling fans from free water.
MeeFog uses high-pressure positive-displacement pumps and precision multi-orifice nozzles to create extremely fine droplets. The system compares droplet spectra against conventional nozzles and maintains droplet diameters small enough for rapid evaporation in the available distance. This delivers effective evaporative cooling with minimal risk of water carryover.
Yes, our systems are commonly installed as retrofits on existing air-cooled and hybrid condensers. The design team reviews your condenser layout, fan arrangement, structure, and operating data and then specifies nozzle frames, piping, and pump skids that fit your existing equipment with limited downtime.
A MeeFog high-pressure fog system uses filtered water of quality appropriate for fine nozzles and plant materials. Water consumption depends on ambient conditions and desired temperature drop, but it is usually much lower than traditional cooling upgrades because all water is used for evaporation. We provide expected water usage profiles based on your site’s weather data.
Our system integrates with plant controls using temperature, humidity, and pressure inputs. You can modulate fog output to match real-time conditions and plant loading. Optional PLC-based controls, VFD-driven pumps, and zone control help you target the best temperature and back-pressure reduction while managing water and power use.
Routine maintenance includes filter changes, nozzle inspection, and pump service at defined intervals. The stainless-steel nozzles and high-pressure lines are designed for long service life, and the system’s modular design provides easy access to your plant staff. We offer maintenance guidelines and spare parts support to keep the system running efficiently.
Because our system increases net plant output and efficiency during high-temperature periods, many plants see short payback times, especially where energy costs spike in hot weather. Please check our steam condenser pre-cooling case studies for details.
