Fog Effects for Immersive Experiences in Live Entertainment
When you arrive at Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament, you’re transported into a captivating fantasy world, complete with gallant knights, dazzling swordplay, and stunning special effects. Every aspect is engineered to create a fully immersive theatrical experience. The production emphasizes both atmosphere and action, and nothing enhances ambiance quite like rising fog sweeping across an arena floor.
For nearly three decades, Medieval Times has depended on Mee Industries’ MeeFog Systems nationwide to create reliable, high-impact fog effects that turn every show into an unforgettable spectacle.
Fog is one of the most valuable assets we have,” says Chris Agnew, Sound and Lighting Manager at Medieval Times, Myrtle Beach. “It works together with our lighting, gobos, coloring, costumes, and horses to create dreamlike scenes of pure fantasy.
Why Fine-Particle Fog Outperforms Mist in Immersive Design
Not all atmospheric effects are created equal. Unlike typical mist systems, MeeFog high-pressure nozzles generate ultra-fine droplets, averaging less than 30 microns in diameter, to create a true fog, not a mist. This technical distinction has significant design implications for lighting designers looking to manipulate light, space, or perception for dramatic effect.
Fine-particle fog behaves differently than mist. While mist dissipates quickly and struggles to interact with lighting, true fog can hold and shape ambient light. Fog diffuses light and creates volume, appearing soft and smoky in white light, and transforming into vibrant, multidimensional visuals under colored lighting. These fine particles also suspend in the air longer, making fog ideal for volumetric lighting effects, scene transitions or dramatic reveals in stage compositions. The result is a cinematic, immersive atmosphere that adds texture, depth, and drama to the entire space.
Engineered for Demanding Theatrical Environments
Medieval Times is a popular tourist destination that offers much more than your typical stage show. Even during the off-season, performances are held multiple times per week – ramping up to 14 shows per week during peak months. The Myrtle Beach location alone can accommodate up to 1,200 guests per show, often filling the arena to capacity. MeeFog systems are built for this kind of demand.
Originally installed in 1997, the fog system at Myrtle Beach performed reliably for 30 years. But between horses trampling PVC lines and knights hurling lances, it eventually needed an upgrade. Mee Industries stepped in to redesign the system layout and install reinforced fogging lines, pumps, and nozzles tailored to the venue’s needs and operational realities.
“The new lines are better protected and the system is designed for our needs to minimize maintenance and run as intended for years to come,” Agnew explains. Routine maintenance is simple: monitor pressure, replace filters, and perform occasional pump oil changes. That means creative producers can spend more time focused on show quality, and less time worrying about equipment.
A Legacy of Immersive Experiences
Mee Industries has been innovating water fog technology for over 50 years. From its debut at the World’s Fair in Osaka to projects with Amazon’s Cloud Forest, Knott’s Berry Farm, and the Exploratorium in San Francisco, MeeFog continues to power artistic vision with technical execution. Whether you’re developing a live show, theme park attraction, or immersive museum exhibit, MeeFog systems deliver the control, reliability, and theatrical impact needed to transform your space.
“MeeFog has been amazing, not just as a product to use but as a partner to work with,” said Agnew. “We encountered nothing short of professionalism, expertise, flexibility, and a strong desire to help us create a system that brings our show to life, night after night, for decades to come.”
