MeeFog Special Effects: Creating Safe, Stunning Fog for Architecture, Art & Entertainment

YouTube video

Full Transcript:

I’m Thomas Mee, CEO of Mee Industries Inc.

At Mee Industries, we’ve been designing and building high-pressure water fogging systems for over 50 years. Our systems serve a wide variety of applications—from special effects at Disneyland to gas turbine power augmentation for electric power generation facilities, as well as humidification for buildings and more.

How MeeFog Systems Work
MeeFog systems use high-pressure water atomization. We start with tap water—often treated with filtration—and atomize it to create extremely fine droplets, around 10 microns in size. These droplets are so small they resemble natural fog and stay suspended in the air for extended periods. This allows us to create dense clouds that move with airflow, producing dynamic and visually striking effects.

Applications and Projects
Our fog systems are used in settings like fountains, zoos, and botanical gardens to create jungle-like environments. One recent project was for the Qatar Airport, where we fogged an indoor tropical garden to simulate a natural rainforest. We’ve worked on landmark projects with many architects over the years, including a major installation at Château de Gruyères in southern Switzerland in collaboration with Diller Scofidio + Renfro, and a fog feature at the World’s Fair in Seville.

Landscape architects frequently bring us their concepts, and we help design custom fog systems to bring those visions to life.

Artistic Collaborations
We’ve also had the honor of working with renowned fog artist Fujiko Nakaya for many years. She has specialized in the art of fog, crafting installations that create unique, visually immersive experiences. Even in her 90s, she’s still actively working—we’re currently planning a project with her at the Dia Beacon Museum in upstate New York.

MeeFog vs. Smoke Machines
Unlike smoke machines, which use heated fluids that condense into particles, MeeFog systems use pure water. This makes them non-toxic and completely safe to breathe—much like natural clouds. Our fog can be either dense or diffused, depending on the desired effect. As it cools, it naturally settles, following the contours of the landscape to create captivating, ever-changing scenes.

Eco-Friendly and Safe
MeeFog systems are eco-friendly and safe for public spaces. They’re often installed in  parks, zoos, and botanical gardens (Amusement Parks), where visitors—especially children—can walk through and enjoy the fog. It’s not uncommon to see children playing and even getting momentarily lost in the mist!
