Over 18 Years of Experience On Increasing Gas Turbine Performance
The basic theory of inlet air cooling
for Gas Turbines is simple enough. Gas Turbines (GTs) are
constant volume machines at a given shaft speed they
always move the same volume of air. But the power output
of a turbine depends on the flow of mass through it. That's
why on hot days, when air is less dense, power output falls and dramatically decreases Gas Turbine performance.
By feeding cooler air into the Gas Turbine, air mass flow
is increased, the result is increased output. Another factor
is the power consumed by the GT's compressor. The work required
to compress air is proportional to the temperature of the
air. By reducing the inlet air temperature, the work required
for the compression process is reduced, which means more
work is available at the turbine output shaft.
